15 Best Toy Cash Registers For Kids

the best toy car register for kids

Cha-ching!  That’s the sound of a winning toy cash register.  Both of my kids loved them– and my 8-year-old daughter still plays with one of her more advanced ones.  A cash register is such a great toy because it lets children imitate something they see Mom and Dad do on a daily basis.  Plus, anything that lets them handle ‘money’ is a huge bonus!

Fisher-Price Classic Toys Retro Cash Register

Best Vintage Cash Register

Fisher-Price offers this nostalgic gem to earn my vote for the best retro cash register.  I have fond memories playing with my own Fisher-Price cash register as a child [circa 1987!] and continue to use Fisher-Price toys with my own children.

This model allows kids to practice counting and color recognition with six different coins.  They can also watch the coins roll down the ramp and turn the crank to open the register and hear the bell ding.

What We Loved:  The retro feel is reminiscent of a 50’s soda fountain.

Watch Out For:  Several reviewers have complained about the quality.

Toy Cash Register Buying Guide

Now that you’ve checked out the best of the bunch, let’s establish some guidelines to get the most bang for your buck.

When it comes to materials, you can essentially divide them into two types of materials:  wood or plastic.  My personal preference is wooden toys, but oftentimes the plastic versions will have more bells and whistles [and require batteries].  Generally speaking, younger kids will appreciate the wooden models more, whereas the older kids will probably benefit from the more high-tech plastic models.  If you opt for a plastic model, make sure it is BPA-free.

Bear in mind the number of pieces and how small they are as well.  As fun as the 50 piece set might look, your 2-year-old probably won’t care.  Conversely, your 5-year-old might be a little less than enthused with a register that has three coins and nothing else.

Older kids gravitate toward models that mimic reality.  They want to do all the things they see their parents do and imitate what they see during a cash register transaction, such as an electronic toy cash register. Consider a model that lets your child stand– such as #14 and #15 on my list– if they are in elementary school.  At the very least, for the older set, give them something that allows for plenty of interaction and a real calculator.

Every child is different, but a general rule of thumb for me is whether or not the toy has a choking hazard.  My now 12-year-old tried to put everything he touched up his nose and in his mouth, so we really had to be careful.  Yet my daughter never once tried to do those things.  Be sure that you know whether or not a toy is too small for your youngster by observing their behavior with their other toys.
