15 Best Rocking Horse Toys For Kids of All Ages

When it comes to reminiscing about childhood, there are some things that are pretty much common staples for most people; Little Golden Books at bedtime, playing catch in the backyard, messy, dripping ice cream in the summertime and galloping on the backs of rocking horses.

There are few toys in the world that are more symbolic of childhood than a rocking horse. Most people, if asked, could probably find a picture of themselves as babies, grinning, cowboy hats on their heads, sitting on their rocking horses.

Today, rocking horse toys are better than ever. There are all different styles and varieties. In addition to the traditional wooden rocking horses, there are also rocking horse toys that are fully plush-covered, soft and fabric-covered or made of durable plastic. There are even rocking horses that make galloping, whinnying and neighing sounds when ridden!

Furthermore, rocking toys are no longer limited to just horses; there are also rocking dragons, rocking giraffes, rocking elephants and more!

By the way… Big Happy House earns a commission through the following hand-picked links at no extra cost to you.

15 Best Rocking Horse Toys For Kids of All Ages

Aside from being tons of fun and enduring symbols of childhood, rocking horses also provide tons of other benefits for your children.

We’ll discuss these in more detail a little later in the buying guide down below, but suffice it to say, buying your baby a rocking horse this holiday season can do far more than just bring delight. They help improve young kids’ coordination, balance and gross motor skills. They also help stimulate creativity and imagination.

In short, rocking horses are amazing.

With so many options out there, though, how exactly do you choose the right one? This is something else we’re going to talk about in the buyer’s guide, but your fist concern is always going to be safety, followed closely by your child’s age and size.

Picking an age- and size-appropriate rocking horse will ensure the safest – and most long-lasting – riding experience for your child.

Now, let’s get to the horses! These are the eleven best rocking horse toys available this season.

labebe Baby Unicorn Rocking Horse

Various Cute Animal Designs

labebe - Baby Rocking Horse, Ride Unicorn, Kid Ride On Toy for 1-3 Year Old, Infant (Boy Girl) Plush Animal Rocker, Toddler/Child Stuffed Ride Toy (Pink)

Not only does the labebe Unicorn Rocking Horse have one of the cutest designs, but its safety features are off the charts, too. The rocker’s seat is surrounded on 3 sides making it more difficult for children to fall off and it has a little seatbelt you can strap your kids in with.

The seat is made of filled PP cotton that’s soft, durable, stain-resistant, and safe for your little one’s skin. At a little over 13 pounds, this ride-on toy is sturdy. The structure is made of solid wood which works great on both carpet and hardwood floors.

Everything about the Unicorn Rocking Horse screams High Quality… but you pay for it. This will probably cost you more than $100 depending on where you buy it.

If you’re not a fan of the pink unicorn, you can also get the Blue Squirrel, Yellow Giraffe or Pink Flamingo.

labebe - Baby Rocking Horse, Kids Ride on Toy, Wooden Riding Horse for 1-3 Years Old Boy&Girl, Toddler/Child Outdoor&Indooor Toy Rocker, Plush Stuffed Animal Rocker Chair, Infant Gift - Blue Squirrel

Labebe also makes several models with convertible wheels which is a nice addition – BUT on the wheeled version, there is no seatbelt – which in my opinion is a major oversite as it is one of the best features on the original version.

I would stick to the wheel-less models – unless you absolutely must have the Hippie Green Dinosaur (which is awesome) as I could only find that design in the wheeled version.

What We Like:

Styles to suit any kid’s taste
One of the safest Rocking Horses on the market
Solid construction
Super soft and cushy
3-side seat with belt to strap younger kids in place

Our Concerns:

No interactive features like some of the other models on this list
Shallow rockers may be too tame for little daredevils.

Hape Rock and Ride Kids Wooden Rocking Horse

The Classic Wooden Rocking Horse for Very Small Riders

Hape Rock and Ride Kid's Wooden Rocking Horse
  • Ages: 10 months – 3 years
  • Colors: Red
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 45 lbs

If you’re actually looking for a real wooden rocking horse, this is the one. It’s wooden through and through. Of all the rocking horses on my list, this is the one that looks most like what the older generations are talking about when they talk about baby rocking horses.

With dimensions of only 26.61″ x 11.14″ x 20.55″, it’s fairly small, so even though the age range is supposedly ten months to three years, we found it worked best with kids on the younger end of that spectrum.

Because it’s made entirely of wood, it’s very durable, but it isn’t very realistic as far as its appearance, and it’s a little pricey to be so small and easily outgrown.

It does have this great “Grow with Me” feature, though, that really makes up for the higher price. The rocking horse toy comes with an adjustable guardrail and a high backrest that you can use when your baby is really small and needs to be secured on the horse to keep from falling off.

As s/he gets a little older, you can remove the guardrail and use just the high backrest instead. Finally, you can remove even that, and your child will have a normal toddler rocking horse to enjoy.

What We Like:

Adjustable “Grow with Me” feature.
Classic wooden rocking horse design.
Extremely durable.
All materials are safe and non-toxic.

Our Concerns:

Small; doesn’t fit all three-year-olds.
Not realistic in appearance.

Qaba Kids Plush Rocking Giraffe

A Cuddly Giraffe for Baby Riders

Qaba Kids Plush Rocking Horse-Style Giraffe Theme Chair

Although this little guy is technically a giraffe, he’s still a really great baby rocking horse. He’s suitable for children between the ages of nine months and two years.

He has a soft, plush body that’s just as cuddly as it is practical, and he has a molded seat area and a safety belt so that even children who can’t hold their balance yet can rock in him without trouble.

The handles and the rockers are made of strong, durable wood, so even though he’s made for the youngest children, he can hold up to 88 pounds.

Other than his eyes, which are stitched firmly into place and very hard to rip free, there are no small parts to choke your babies, and thanks to the safety belt, riding in this little guy is fairly risk-free.

The rocker weighs five and a half pounds, which is sturdy enough for rocking in without trouble, but it can be pushed over sideways if a child is standing and leaning against it. The giraffe also sings a song when his ear is pressed.

What We Like:

Incredibly safe for small riders.
Soft and comfortable with molded seat.
Includes safety belt.
Despite its size, holds up to 88 pounds.

Our Concerns:

Requires specialty batteries (initial set included).
Quickly outgrown by some toddlers.

Little Bird Told Me Bobble Infant Rocker Ride On

A Snuggable, Huggable Pal for Younger Riders

Little Bird Told Me LB3027 Bobble & Pip Infant Rocker Ride On
  • Ages: 9 months – 4 years
  • Colors: Various
  • Styles: Rufus – Bobble – Lambert – Lewis – Moonbeam – Pixie – Rosie
  • Weight Limit: 44 lbs

Of all the baby and toddler rocking horses on the list, this one was probably my favorite in terms of appearance. There are six different styles of horses and one lamb, and their soft, fabric-covered bodies with the beautiful patterns make them look absolutely adorable.

They look like a child’s favorite stuffed animal and most comfortable pair of pajamas all in one. Bobble, pictured here, is the plainest of the styles, but even she’s lovely, and she looks the most realistic as well.

There are no interactive features. This is a standard fabric covered rocking horse that encourages children to be creative, make their own sounds and create their own narratives about what’s happening.

It’s a great, easy-to-use, traditional rocking horse that works well for children of about nine months up to four years.

It even features a sensory-pleasing crinkle mane and tail and removable foot plates for when your children still need a little help balancing.

What We Like:

Absolutely beautiful.
Soft and well-made.
Comes with an additional small, cuddly plush.
Different options to suit different tastes.

Our Concerns:

No electronic sounds/functions, which may be disappointing for some children.
A popular choice; goes out-of-stock often.

Step2 Patches the Rocking Horse

One of the Safest and Best Options for the Youngest Riders?

Step2 Patches the Rocking Horse
  • Ages: 12 – 30 months
  • Colors: Brown
  • Styles: Na
  • Weight Limit: 35 lbs. (15.9 kg)

This is probably my favorite choice for a baby rocking horse. It’s suitable for children 12 months to 30 months old. In many ways, it’s similar to the popular Little Tikes plastic rocking horse, but we prefer this one because it looks so much more like an actual horse.

Patches is made of a single piece of molded hard plastic and doesn’t have any small parts that could come off and be swallowed by little mouths. He also has a molded saddle seat that’ll help the youngest children keep their balance more easily, so he’s a lot safer for very young children than many other “standard” rocking horses.

He weighs a little over six pounds and features a wide base, so he’s sturdy and not likely to tip over while in use, and the plastic construction means he can be used indoors or outdoors. He’s also very easy to clean, which is always a plus when dealing with little kids.

There’s no assembly required, but you’ll have to add the stickers and handle grips yourself. It’s also reasonably priced, which is nice for a baby rocking horse because babies outgrow everything so quickly.

What We Like:

Reasonably priced.
One-piece construction with molded seat for safe riding.
Easy to clean.
Can be used indoors or outdoors.
No assembly required.

Our Concerns:

Is quickly outgrown by some children.

Best Rocking Horses for Toddlers (2 – 3 Years Old)

Melissa & Doug Rocking Horse

Heirloom Quality Simple Rocking Horse

Melissa & Doug Plush Rocking Horse
  • Ages: 2 – 4 years
  • Colors: Brown
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 150 lbs!

If you’re looking for a simple and elegant, classic rocking horse there is really no better choice than this adorable brown horsey from Melissa & Doug.

It has super soft plush fur, a realistic saddle and amazing attention to detail.

The solid wood rockers have just the right amount of sway – enough so your kids can imagine themselves an adventurous cowboy galloping across the open range – but not so much that you will stress about them doing an end-over and landing on their little heads!

Like all Melissa and Doug products, it is very durable and strong – the horse can hold up to 150 pounds – which is the highest weight limit on our list!

As an added bonus, the horse makes fun galloping noises when your kids press its ear.

One of the best features of this particular rocking horse is the wood slats that span the wooden rockers. It creates a platform that makes it easier (and safer) when your kids mount the horse. It is also a great place for your kids to put their feet while riding.

Honestly, this is such a simple yet effective design upgrade, I am surprised none of the other manufacturers are doing this.

Things To Consider

Usually Melissa and Doug items get close to 5 star reviews, strangely this Rocking Horse was slightly lower than usual and I almost left it out of this roundup as a result.

But after digging into the hundreds of reviews it turns out that the lower than usual rating is almost exclusively the result of one problem.

MANY MANY reviewers complained that it was difficult to assemble – more specifically, you need to pull the legs with all your might to line up the screw holes.

But once that was done, most people raved about the awesome quality and how much their kids love this Rocking Horse.

What We Like:

150 pound weight limit
Great quality and attention to detail
High quality sounds when ear is pressed.
Wooden platform makes it easy to mount and ride.

Our Concerns:

Some people had trouble with assembly.

Little Tikes Rocking Horse

Almost Indestructible Indoors and Out!

Little Tikes Rocking Horse Blue
  • Ages: 1 – 3 years
  • Colors: BlueMagenta
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 50 lbs.

This is one of those classic toys that never goes out of styles. It’s been around for ages and kids never seem to get sick of it. If I were stranded on a desert island for a year with a bunch of Toddlers, this is definitely one of the 5-6 toys I would bring along.

There is a good reason why this rocker is a top pick of just about every nursery and play place I have ever been… it is practically indestructible! You can use it inside or outside and clean it off with a damp rag.

While it is not cute and fuzzy, and does not look as realistic as some of the other Rocking Horses on the list, kids just don’t seem to care.

Although I would not recommend this Rocker for kids over 3, my boy played with it until he was 5 years old. Of course by then his rocking routine was so insane that I thought for sure he was gong to flip the poor little horsy! Luckily he was never able to, mainly due to the low center of gravity and safe design.

The manufacturers recommended weight limit is 50 lbs – of course for legal reasons I can’t dispute that – but I will say that I have spent a good amount of time “racing” my kid on one of these and I weigh considerably more that 50lbs.

Another cool thing about the Little Tikes Rocking Horse is that you can use it with Alexa. Just download the Little Tikes Play Big Skill on any device that supports Alexa and your kids can can ride their Rocking Horse through the desert or into the jungle.

It is very light weight so your kiddo can move it around by themselves. It is made of hard plastic with smooth edges all around and it comes fully assembled so you don’t have to worry about screws that your kids could put in their mouths and accidentally swallow.

What We Like:

Super tough and safe
Hard plastic is easy to clean
Use it indoors and outdoors
No assembly required

Our Concerns:

Does not look like a real horse
Not interesting for kids older than 3

Rockin Rider Charger 2-in-1 Pony Ride On

2 Toys for the Price of One

Rockin' Rider Charger 2-in-1 Pony Ride-On
  • Ages: 1 – 3 years
  • Colors: PinkBlack Brown
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 40 lbs.

The Rockin’ Ride Pony features an adorable pony design that can easily go from rocking to riding in a matter of seconds.

The pony has 4 plastic wheels that allow your child to scoot around the house using their little legs. When they get tired you can change it up by locking the horse into the rocker base, instantly changing it into a rocking horse.

The Rocking Rider is covered in a soft, plushy material that your kids are bound to enjoy and when they squeeze the pony’s ear, they can hear an exclusive My Pony song, along with six phrases.

Finally, the pony has a synchronized moving mouth that’ll make the whole experience feel more realistic for your tots.

Things To Consider

The Rocking Rider gets great reviews from most parents and kids but there have been numerous complaints about the song player breaking after several months and the wheels not rolling as smoothly as they should.

This is a great option if you have limited space (or budget) the pony’s ability to transform from ride-on to rocker will keep your child entertained for hours. However, If you are not that interested in the ride-on aspect and just want a simple rocking horse there are much better choices on this list.

What We Like:

Converts from wheeled ride on to a rocking horse
Squeeze ears to hear the “I’m a Little Pony” song, 6 fun talking phrases, and sound effects
Talks and sings with a synchronized moving mouth
Soft, huggable plush
Relatively cheap for all you get

Our Concerns:

There are better choices if you aren’t interested in the rid-on aspect
Some complaints about overall quality

Qaba Kids Plush Toy Rocking Horse Pony

A Warm, Plush Rocking Horse Toy with Real Authentic Sounds

Qaba Kids Plush Toy Rocking Horse Pony with Realistic Sounds - Brown
  • Ages: 3 – 4 years
  • Colors: BrownPink
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 80 lbs.

While this isn’t the traditional wooden rocking horse toy you might’ve grown up with yourself, it is a great choice.

Over the last decade, wooden rocking horses have taken a backseat to these softer, more realistic plush models, so this is basically the “new classic” that you’ll see in most houses. It’s soft and comfortable, and while it doesn’t truly feel like a real horse, it’s going to feel real enough for the two- to four-year-old toddler for whom you buy it.

At only five pounds, it’s a very lightweight pony, but it can hold children up to 80 pounds! Considering your average four-year-old only weighs about 35 pounds, this is one tough pony.

Your children will love it because it looks so realistic. The soft coat and fluffy mane and tail are very similar to a real horse, and your babies will love petting and grooming this toddler rocking horse almost as much as they enjoy riding him.

Being able to brush him will also help them learn responsibility and the importance of taking care of things.

The wooden rockers and handles are a nice nod to the traditional wooden horse you probably remember from your own childhood.

He also comes with a nice saddle and bridle with included reins. One of the best features in this horse, though, is that it makes realistic horse sounds. All your children have to do is squeeze its ear, and he’ll neigh and make clomping, galloping sounds for a truly authentic experience.

The horse requires AA batteries to work, but the first set should be included with your purchase. Also, although the rocking horse can easily hold children up to 80 pounds, the seat height is only 20 inches off the ground, so while it meets the weight requirements for older children, the low height wouldn’t accommodate them very well.

Be sure to take that into account if you’re considering buying this heavy-duty toddler rocking horse for an older child.

What We Like:

80-pound weight limit.
Great, realistic horse sounds.
Usable reins.
Semi-realistic coat, mane and tail feel nice and help teach children responsibility.

Our Concerns:

A popular toy; goes out of stock often.
There are some concerns about the durability of the rockers.

Happy Trails Rocking Dagwood Dragon

For the Fantasy-Loving Toddler who Prefers Dragons to Horses

Happy Trails Rocking Dagwood Dragon, 27
  • Ages: 2 – 4 years
  • Colors: Green
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 80lbs.

Although advertised for children two to four years old, we found 18 months to three years to be more accurate.

Its dimensions are 27″ x 14″ x 19″, so most four-year-old children are going to be a little too large for it. For kids three and under, though, it’s a fantastic toddler rocking horse, although it’s actually a rocking dragon, which is what makes it so cool!

If you have a little one running around that loves How to Train Your Dragon, The Good Dinosaur or even Harry Potter, s/he’s probably going to prefer this super awesome dragon to a plain old horse.

The rockers are made from sturdy pine wood, and the dragon’s covered in polyester material that’s soft to the touch. The details on him are great; he has brightly colored claws, little horns on his head and cute little wings.

Weighing a little over seven pounds, he’s also pretty sturdy, although if your little one starts going a little rocking-crazy, he might be a little wobbly.

He doesn’t have a molded seat, so you’ll want to make sure your child can balance well enough to ride him safely.

What We Like:

It’s a dragon!
Sturdy pine wood rockers; durable construction.
Nice attention to detail.
Soft to the touch.

Our Concerns:

Too small for the advertised four-year-old maximum age.
No molded seat.

VTech Prance and Rock Learning Unicorn

An Interactive Learning Rocking Horse Toy that Truly Grows with Your Child

VTech Prance and Rock Learning Unicorn
  • Ages: 1 – 3 years
  • Colors:
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 42 lbs

If you’re looking for a rocking horse toy that your 12-month-old child can continue to use for quite some time as s/he grows, check out the VTech Prance and Rock Unicorn. It’s a unicorn instead of a horse, and its appearance is really geared more towards girls than boys, although that certainly doesn’t mean boys can’t use it.

It’s a great learning tool. It teaches your child about colors, plays songs and music and even speaks different phrases. As your child rocks, the sounds coordinate with the motions.

Best of all, though, is that this rocking unicorn turns into a ride-on unicorn when your child gets big enough to be able to ride around on his/her own. This allows your child to start exploring the world – within the confines of your home, of course.

Things To Consider

The toy requires two AAA batteries, and you’ll want to buy some because the ones included with it are for demo purposes only and won’t last long.

The manufacturer says this rocking toy is suitable for children up to three years old – BUT with such a low max weight limit (42 lbs.) heavier 3-year-olds might be too big for this little horsey!

What We Like:

Converts into a ride-on toy.
Relatively reasonably priced.
Very interactive; holds children’s interest.
Has a learning mode that teaches young children about colors and more.

Our Concerns:

Looks “girly.”
Wheels don’t roll smoothly on some surfaces.

Fisher-Price Bounce and Spin Puppy

A Whole Lot of Fun in a Little Bitty Package

Fisher-Price Bounce and Spin Puppy
  • Ages: 1 – 5 years
  • Colors:
  • Styles:
  • Weight Limit: 55 lbs.

If you have a child who is one to five years old, this is a nice choice. It’s technically a bounce and spin puppy as opposed to a rocking horse, but the principle behind it is largely the same.

Although it only weighs a little over 12 pounds, it has an extremely large base for extra stability.

The dog, itself, is somewhat small, but even so, it can hold kids up to 55 pounds, and this pup has a lot going on! There are flashing, multi-colored lights, interactive buttons, and it plays music!

In addition to being able to bounce on it – similar to bouncing on a spring horse – your child can also spin on it. (There’s a safety feature that only allows it to spin if your child is sitting on it.)

It’s a fun, exciting way for your child to improve his/her balance and coordination. It also has a learning mode to stimulate your little one’s brain. You’ll have to put it together though.

What We Like:

Spins as well as bounces.
Lots of interactive features.
Has a learning mode.
Safe for children up to five years old.

Award Winning Hape High Seas Wooden Toddler Rocking Ride On

Best Rocking Horse Alternative

Award Winning Hape High Seas Wooden Toddler Rocking Ride On
  • Ages: 1 – 15 years (according to manufacturer – I think more like 1-3)
  • Colors: White/Blue
  • Styles: na
  • Weight Limit: 110 lbs. (50 Kg)

Calling all mateys, pirates, and scallywags! If your kids love pretending to be out at sea or having fun maritime adventures, we recommend the Hape High Seas ride-on.

Yes, I know it is not technically a “Rocking Horse” but this little boat rocker has such a cool design I just had to include it.

The High Seas Rocking ride-on would be an incredible addition to any play room as it can help your toddlers improve balance. Also, it’s made from child-safe materials and coated with non-toxic finishes so it’s perfectly safe for all tots.

Things To Consider

This High Seas Rocking Ride-On comes in pieces so you will need to put it together. But based on what most reviews say, if you can assemble an Ikea shelf you should not have too much trouble with this toy.

You should also be aware that most reviewers thought this rocker was going to be bigger. This is not a problem if your kids are toddlers, but the general consensus is that you should not purchase this unit for kids older than 3 – 4 years old.

What We Like:

Super cute nautical theme
High quality materials
Awesome for photos!

Our Concerns:

Not technically a “Rocking Horse”
Rocking motion is a bit choppy

Rockin’ Rider Lucky Talking Plush Spring Horse

The Bouncing, Talking Horse for Older Riders

Rockin' Rider Lucky Talking Plush Spring Horse,Brown,40.00 x 24.00 x 38.00 Inches
  • Ages: 2 – 5 years
  • Colors:
  • Styles:
  • Weight Limit: 65 lbs.

If you’re looking for an awesome spring rocking horse for older children, this is a great option.

The recommended age for this guy starts at two years old, but we found that to be a little young. Three and up seems to be the best range for him because he can definitely bounce, and it takes a child with good balance to bounce, ride and not fall off the side.

He’s also covered in warm, soft plush, so he’s almost as cuddly as he is fun to ride. There are easy-grip handles for holding onto and stirrups with three stages, so the horse can accommodate your growing child.

Another great addition this guy has is that he can talk and sing. He speaks six different phrases and even sings I’m A Little Pony, with his motorized mouth moving the whole time.

If you have an older kid who loves to ride, this is a great rocking horse option. The manufacturer’s weight limit on him is 65 pounds, but we tested it up to about 95 and found no issues with it. This was not tested with extended use, however.

What We Like:

Great for older riders.
Durable steel frame and safety covers over springs.
Talks and sings; motorized moving mouth.
Three-stage stirrups help horse grow with your child.
Spring construction means he can really bounce!

Our Concerns:

Not ideal for young riders.
65-pound weight limit seems low for the size.

Animal Adventure Real Wood Ride-On Plush Rockers

Animal Adventure Rockers are absolutely full of personality, and there are a ton of different options to suit your child’s creative mind.

Does your daughter pretend she’s Emily Elizabeth and need a Clifford the Big Red Dog to be her sidekick? They’ve got one!

Is your son always creeping through the house trying to help out the Scooby Gang but missing his very own Scooby Doo? They’ve got one!

Does your grandchild often dream of flying through the clouds on the back of a magical, red-nosed reindeer or stomping across the land on a huge dinosaur? Guess what! They’ve got those, too!

Animal Adventure | Real Wood Ride-On Plush Rocker | Clifford | Perfect for Ages 3+
Animal Adventure | Real Wood Ride-On Plush Rocker | Scooby Doo | Perfect for Ages 3+
Animal Adventure Soft Landing | Joyrides | Dinosaur | Character Rocker

They also have a swan, llama, elephant, flamingo, narwhal and two different colored unicorns. If your child happens to be a traditionalist, they have a beautiful chestnut horse for him/her as well.

You can see all of the variations HERE.

Each rocking “animal” is slightly different in size, but for most of them, the saddle/seat is about 20-22 inches off the ground, and they can all hold children up to about 75 pounds.

Each one is about three to three and a half pounds, so your kids will be able to drag them around all over the house without trouble. Additionally, though most of them are made of true wood, they’re covered in soft fur and fluffy hair, so they feel really nice to the touch.

The pros and cons of these animals are going to be a little different for each animal. For instance, the swan and the flamingo are quite a bit lower to the ground than the horses and unicorns, but they have a molded seat. All-in-all, though, these are all good options.

Things To Consider

Some of the variations claim they can be used by children as young as 18 months, but we’ve found the more appropriate age to be between two and five years old.

At 18 months, some children can’t hold themselves on the animals without falling off the side. (The bird-styles feature molded seats and could potentially accommodate 18-month-old children.)

What We Like:

So many varieties!
Fluffy hair and soft fur make riding a pleasurable tactile experience.
All varieties come pre-assembled.
Incredibly lightweight.
Includes some licensed characters.

Our Concerns:

Some variations are too small for bigger kids.
Only holds children up to 75 pounds.
Some of the animal options are more expensive than others.

Radio Flyer Blaze Interactive Riding Horse

Old-School Spring Rocking Horse with a Makeover

Radio Flyer Blaze Interactive Riding Horse
  • Ages: 2 – 6 years
  • Colors: Brown
  • Styles: BlazeFreckles
  • Weight Limit: 60 lbs.

Of all the rocking horses on this list, this one makes me most nostalgic because, guys, this was my rocking horse. I rode this thing until I was much too large and had to hold my feet up off the ground to keep them from dragging. I loved this horse.

Of course, back then, there were no convenient safety coverings over the springs, and I spent many an afternoon getting peroxided and bandaged from a popped spring.

Thankfully, construction has improved quite a bit in the last three decades, and now Blaze is made on a durable steel frame, and the springs are covered in safety wraps to prevent any injuries from occurring.

He’s also had a few other upgrades since I rode him 30 years ago. He comes with a realistic mane and a comb for your children to use to brush it out, which teaches them responsibility and how to take care of animals.

It also comes with a carrot they can feed to Blaze, and he’ll actually make authentic chewing sounds, which is super cool.

There are three riding modes – walking, trotting and galloping – and because he’s an interactive horse, he’ll make corresponding walking, trotting or galloping sounds in response to whichever movement your children are using.

He’s well-constructed, and the extra-large, spider-like legs keep him very sturdy and safe from tipping over sideways. There’s an EZ Climb Step for getting on and off and stirrups underneath him.

What We Like:

All kinds of great interactive sounds.
Feeding and combing Blaze teaches children responsibility.
Great for older riders.
Solid steel frame and other safety features.
Can really get moving!

Our Concerns:

Maximum weight limit (60 pounds) seems too light for the size.
More expensive than other options.

Why You Should Buy a Rocking Horse

Rocking horses (and other animals) are lots of fun for your child, but they also provide a lot of additional benefits besides simple entertainment. As we’ve already mentioned, they help improve your child’s gross motor skills, coordination and balance. They can also help strengthen leg muscles and improve walking skills.

They’re also great educators. They inspire your child’s imagination and creativity, and many of them come with additional learning features to improve their educational value. You can also use them to teach your child about caring for animals and taking care of other living things. (This is especially true of the ones that come with grooming equipment and/or fake food.)

How to Choose the Best Rocking Horse

As we’ve already mentioned, the first things to consider when looking for a rocking horse are the age and size of your child. As with anything concerning babies and children, safety comes first, and buying a toy designed for an older/younger child can be dangerous.

Furthermore, check the height and weight restrictions, especially if your child is outside of the “normal” height and weight for his/her age. Some of these toys are very low to the ground, and a tall child might not be able to use them comfortably.

Here are some other considerations:

You’ll want to find a rocking horse that’s sturdy and durable. Look for rocking horses made of strong, high-quality materials or ones with extra-large bases for extra stability.

Check them out beforehand if possible. Rock them aggressively with your hands; stand to the side of them and see how easy they are to tip over sideways. This’ll give you a good idea of how safe they’ll be for your child.

Durability is also important. You’ll want the rocking horse to be made of solid materials so that it doesn’t start breaking or falling apart after only a few months.

Classic hardwood is usually very durable, but if it’s assembled poorly – with glue instead of screws/nails, for instance – it could be just as flimsy as a non-wooden toy. Furthermore, there are some non-wooden toys that are very durable despite being made of a lesser material.

The way a child sits on a rocking horse should also be a consideration. For young children who can’t balance properly yet, you’ll want a molded, concave seat. This’ll feel more natural to them, as they’ll feel like they’re sitting in a chair. There will also be back support. Older children can use more realistic saddle-type seats because they should be able to balance themselves without the additional support.

In addition to just being sturdy and stable, some rocking horses also have additional safety features that you may want for your child, especially if s/he is small. Some rocking horses feature safety belts; others have added back support. There are also steps to help shorter children climb on the horses, which is safer than them trying to jump onto the horse’s back.

Assembly Required

If you’re handy with tools, having to assemble your child’s new rocking horse might not be an issue. If you aren’t, though, you may want to buy a pre-assembled rocking horse toy or buy from a company that offers free toy assembly or toy assembly for a small fee.

Potential Years of Use

Durability plays a part in how long your child will be able to use a rocking horse, but it’s not the only factor involved. Some rocking horses grow with your child either because they have removable safety features or because they’re convertible into something more suitable for older children. If you’re paying a high price for something, you’ll most likely want to buy something your child can use for many years.

Traditional Versus Technological

There are “traditional” rocking horses, which are usually just wooden rocking horses or wooden rocking horses covered in fabric or plush coats. They’re meant for riding and nothing more.

Then there are more interactive horses with lots of great, technological features like lights, sounds, learning modes and other exciting things.

Figure out which you and your child would prefer.

Many parents no longer care about gender-specific toys, but if you do, there are some rocking horses that are designed to look more feminine, while others are designed to look more masculine. Still others are unisex and could work well for both genders.

Indoor Versus Outdoor

Are you buying a rocking horse for inside the home, or would you prefer something your child could use in the backyard? This is a really important question to answer before buying a rocking horse because several of these aren’t designed for outside use.

The fabric and plush-covered horses would not do well outdoors, while the plastic ones are usually just fine.

Ease of Cleaning

Kids are kids, and kids make messes. Chances are, at some point, your child’s new horse is going to get dirty. It’s important to figure out which rocking horses can be cleaned and how easy it is to do so.

Whether you’re looking for something traditional or something that excites the senses and helps your kid learn, a rocking horse is a good option. They’ve been a true staple of childhood for decades, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t carry on the tradition with your child.

Simply check out the age, weight and height requirements and find one that works best for your child’s needs. They’ll be rocking out in no time.
